Exploring the age old themes of duty and love, exile and return. This is the story of Naomi Adams and her estranged daughter-in-law Zo Zalum. It is also the story of Zo 's two small sons; Chris and Max, who at first come between the women, but ultimately bring them together. The novel opens in contemporary Sydney, gripped by drought, and two boys aged eight (Max Adams) and ten (Chris Adams) are being raised by their paternal grandmother (Naomi Adams). Their father died in a car accident eight years previously and their mother (Zo Zalum), implicated in his death, walked out on all of them. Eight years on and Zo decides to reclaim the care of her children, but it is quickly evident that she can't manage. What should their grandmother Naomi do?
