Born in Georgia, James Michael Moriarty soon relocated to Santa Cruz, where his father instilled in him a love for adventure and most importantly - surfing. Dabbling in small contests and events, Jay eventually teamed up with wise local elder Rick "Frosty" Hesson, who began priming Jay for a legendary future on the waves. Meanwhile, Jay morphed into an accomplished swimmer, diver, paddler, and fisherman, loving surfing but mostly loving the ocean.
Following a big-wave landing that landed him on the cover of Surfer magazine and a sponsor with O'Neill, Jay graduated into instant fame and began traveling the world and instructing others. The day before his 23rd birthday, Jay suffered an untimely demise while surfing alone in the Maldives, leaving behind a newlywed wife, a huge fan base of aspiring surfers, and a legend of epic proportions.
