The Extraordinary Life of Des Renford - King of the Channel.
The death of swimming's "Marathon Man", Des Renford, on the penultimate day of 1999 unleashed a wave of emotion rare in Australia.
Des Renford, who swam the English Channel an astonishing 19 times, touched many Australians with his inspiring achievements and the generosity of his life. His was the story of an average "battler" who chanced to find, as he neared 40, his special gift. In the years that followed, as he tackled and triumphed over icy and storm-tossed seas, Des sent out a message for us all: it's never too late to achieve something extraordinary. In later years, Des fought different battles - in particular against a wonky heart, which knocked him down again and again; a battle he lost at the closing of 1999.
This updated edition tells the Des Renford story in full. It is a colourful, humorous and deeply inspirational portrait of a robust life, yet poignant and immensely sad at its ending as Des's thousands of admirers and friends struggled to come to terms with the reality that the indestructible King of the Channel was no more.
