'New Under The Sun' shines a critical light on Australia's Jewish community. In a range of essays from contributors such as Robert Manne, Ruth Ostrow, Arnold Zable, Andrea Goldsmith, Dorothy Porter, John Safran, Marcus Einfeld and Julie Szego, the anthology takes a snapshot of Australia's Jewish community and analyses the issues the community faces as it moves into the twenty-first century. For many years Australia's Jewish community was defined by its post Second World War migrants. These newcomers to Australia - many of whom were Holocaust survivors - set the parameters for how the community would respond to the challenges of migration, assimilation, Zionism and antisemitism. As we enter the new century, this generation is making way for a younger group of leaders. In scholarship, religious practice, attitudes to Israel and relationships to the broader community, this new generation of Jews is finding its own way, and redefining the hallmarks of Jewish identity and experience. New Under the Sun is a provocative, challenging and important collection.
