A famous Elizabethan tragedy with a modern rendition of the playtext.
The Revenger's Tragedy is a famous Elizabethan tragedy set in a dissolute Renaissance court in Italy, a maelstrom of vice and intrigue. The play was entered in the Stationer's Register on 7 October 1607 without an author being named. Some scholars believe the author was Thomas Middleton, but the question remains undecided and there is always the possibility that the author had a reason for remaining anonymous.
In this edition, students will find a wealth of information to support their studies: an extended introduction exploring theatrical and historical context, critical reactions, background on the author and stage history. The play itself contains numerous notes and explanations throughout to aid students' understanding.
The revised introduction examines the dark brilliance of the hero Vindice, and places the play in the context of contemporary debates about justifying rebellion against tyranny. New material on the play's borrowings from several Shakespeare plays is included and a new source discovered in 2005. The new survey of the play on the Modern Stage contains accounts of several new productions and the film version by Alex Cox.
