A year after Ann Brighton marries the Duke of Carlton, Raine Montand still occupies Forsythe House with her Uncle Skip and her friend Augusta Black. Raine takes a job at a popular London newspaper as an editorial cartoonist. One day while in Hyde Park she overhears an argument and later learns that a upcoming book by Lord Gavin Southerland has a plot very similar to this disturbing argument about a politician's murder.

Raine decides to investigate Southerland and events around this murder. She discovers Gavin is a good friend of Ann's husband Rhys and plots to get closer to him. She rents the cottage next to Gavin and poses as a grieving widow. They become friends and Gavin hires Raine to be his secretary and they grow closer as they work together on Gavin's book. Gavin begins to suspect Raine is not all she says she is and goes to confront her. He saves her from being attacked and pledges his protection . Gavin realizes he loves Raine and asks her to marry him despite his doubts on marriage and her past.
