In the year 2025 the Internet practically runs the world, and its virtual reality webwork has to be policed by Net Force to prevent terrorists from sabotaging it. But sometimes they need help. Which is where the Net Force Explorers come in, the young people's auxiliary for computer whiz-kids who have made it through a tough training programme.
Matt Hunter knows his friends think he is seriously obsessed with detective fiction. Especially when he becomes involved in an exclusive sim - a virtual reality simulation of a murder mystery designed by "whodunit" virtuoso Ed Saunders.
But when Ed dies in suspicious circumstances, reality begins to intrude on the virtual world in a big way. It seems that Ed had based the game on a genuine unsolved murder case - and someone doesn't want it solved.
Suddenly, Matt and his fellow sim players find themselves playing a very different sort of game - a dangerous contest against a ruthless mastermind who thinks nothing of killing to keep this case cold.
