One April evening, during a dinner party she is hosting with her husband, Helen Glass slips unannounced from her home. Returning to the florist shop where she works, she meets an intruder and becomes the victim of a devastating act of violence. Months on, though the physical scars are diminished, the psychological scars seem ever deepening. With her husband William, she moves to France for the summer to recover from the trauma. In France, they meet Reuben, an American playwright struggling with his own demons. He quickly befriends Helen and becomes her confidante. As the trial of his her attacker approaches and the distance between Helen and William grows, they realise that the only way of saving their relationship it to confront the truths of that April night.
