My Father's Moon recounts the coming of age of Vera, a young, sheltered schoolgirl educated in a Quaker boarding school, with loving parents who have scrimped and saved to pay for her education. It is only when she becomes a student nurse at a military hospital during World War II that she begins to find confidence in herself, but a disastrous and painful transition to womanhood leaves her pregnant and unmarried. She flees her parents' shame and the stares at the hospital and tries to make her way in the world. Her story is set against the backdrop of wartime London and the Blitz, and vividly captures the grim atmosphere and sorrow of the time.
