Germany, July 1990. The Berlin Wall has fallen, communism is collapsing, and a brave new democratic era seems just over the horizon. But in Berlin and Moscow, communist hardliners are taking counter-measures, preparing for the future, making sure they retain their devious hold on power.
Axel, a reform-minded KGB officer, decides to leak secret Soviet plans to sabotage the future reunified Germany to a British journalist. In the ensuing chase across Europe, he calls for help on the journalist's wife, Katharine, with whom he had an affair in Moscow ten years earlier.
Should Katharine help him now? Can she trust a former KGB officer, let alone the lover who abandoned her, leaving her nothing but ten years of silence . . .
