As a ship's chaplain during the Battle of Trafalgar, Toby Lovell steers his captain's vessel to victory but suffers a wound that puts an end to his naval days. Once he has recovered, he travels to Porthluney on the Cornish coast to become curate of the parish church, but little does he realise the challenge that lies ahead of him.
John Bettison, the local landowner, is facing financial ruin and, owing to a dispute with Toby's predecessor, he has banned his workers from attending church. So, with no congregation other than a stray dog and an obstreperous donkey, Toby is determined to bring about change and, by saving the lives of smugglers and rescuing sailors from a shipwrecked frigate, he soon fuels Bettison's anger.
But the trouble really starts when Toby falls in love with Bethany Poole, a local Quaker girl. When her society rejects her, she turns to Toby for support but a dreadful misunderstanding involving Bettison forces her to leave without a word of explanation and Toby will not rest until they are reunited . . .
