Illustrated by Junko Morimoto
Calligraphy was what Mieko liked to do more than anything else in the world. Her art teacher called her art supplies - a fine sable brush, an inkstick, an inkstone shaped like a lily pond, and a roll of rice paper - "the four treasures". Mieko also had the fifth treasure - the beauty in the heart.
But the bomb which destroyed Nagasaki also destroyed the fifth treasure. Mieko's heart is filled with only bitterness because her injured hand prevents her from painting word-pictures.
This inspiring story of hope and friendship tells of Mieko's recovery. Eleanor Coerr has created a vivid portrait of courage, drawing on a time that cries to be remembered. Mieko's story is delicately enhanced by the evocative cover and elegant calligraphy of Junko Morimoto, award-winning illustrator and author of 'My Hiroshima'.
