Illustrated by Junko Morimoto
Calligraphy was what Mieko liked to do more than anything else in the world. Her art teacher called her art supplies - a fine sable brush, an ink-stick, an inkstone shaped like a lily pond, and a roll of rice paper - "the four treasures". Mieko also had the fifth treasure - beauty in the heart. But the bomb which destroyed Nagasaki also destroyed the fifth treasure. Mieko's heart is filled only with bitterness because her injured hand prevents her from painting word pictures.
This inspiring story of hope and friendship tells of Mieko's recovery.
