In 1942, a downed RAF bomber's crew placed their hopes for survival on Winkie, a blue chequered homing pigeon. Winkie flew 120 miles over water, a message attached to her leg, ensuring their rescue. For her heroism, Winkie became the inaugural recipient of the Dickin Medal - an animal Victoria Cross.
