The River Medway has long sustained the people who lived along its banks. It became a thoroughfare for commerce, and home to a Royal Dockyard but today many of the old industries and the dockyard have gone, and the river is quieter. Nonetheless, although fewer cargo ships moor in the once-bustling `Pool' of Rochester, the river is far from dead. New industries are growing, water leisure activities are expanding and tourism is developing. More significantly, people still work on the river - some are newcomers bringing different crafts and innovative ideas; whilst others have spent their lives here and have a unique and valuable knowledge. Together they create a fascinating social landscape combining images of a disappearing past with future hopes and aspirations - that often includes preservation of traditions.
