The Most Tragic and Romantic Figure of British History.
Second Edition.
Mary Queen of Scots was a queen before she was a week old. Catholic Queen of Protestant Scotland, she was eventually forced to abdicate in favour of her son and seek the protection of her greatest rival, Elizabeth I of England. As a Catholic with many English supporters, under Elizabeth, Mary found herself a prisoner for life. It was certain that Elizabeth's position was unsafe as long as Mary lived. Finally in 1586 Mary was accused of complicity in Babington's plot against the Queen. She was executed in 1587, in the eyes of her followers a martyr for the Catholic church.
