The Tarrants and the Howards have been friends for many years. Ben Tarrant teaches geography at a prestigious local school, while James Howard works as a GP at a practice in the town centre. His wife, Juliet, an ex-actress with fading looks, dabbles in beauty therapy, while the less easy-going Isobel Tarrant sees to her husband's ageing aunt and her eccentric neighbour before attending to her own tentative needs.
Behind these apparently normal mid-life, middle-class preoccupation, however, lurk the seeds of great and growing unhappiness. No relationship or situation is quite what it seems, and as the strains between the Tarrants and the Howards become both more visible and more interconnected, the collapse of their ostensibly ordered world seems inevitable.
