Terza Vita, a third life.
This enchanting book looks at the fruitful opportunities of new interpersonal relationships after a two-year compulsory break. Rome, artistic and monumental, is the setting. The background is lively yet anonymous: empty spaces spared from ubiquitous tourism. It was here that Mar Sáez decided to observe the reappearing residents, and above all the yearning young lovers, on the beaches of Rome's Ostia seaside resort.
Sáez looks at her subjects from a proximity that is as invasive as it is complicit. She wanted her photographs to be permeable to the intimacy of those portrayed. Sáez captures their vulnerability, in an agreed exchange between the photographer, the photographed and the future spectator during a moment of historical and social transition.
Playing out in an iconic multi-temporal city, Terza Vita approaches the concept of freedom and the map of affections born in the bosom of a third life, a life beyond the nostalgia of a stable past, beyond the shock of uncertainty of the present, beyond the future.
