Machu Picchu, the famed Incan site in Peru high in the Andes, is one of those talismanic places that everyone dreams of visiting. The beauty of this extraordinary place is celebrated here in the striking photography of Barry Brukoff. His images - mostly in black-and-white duotone, but with a sampling in colour and bronzetone - evoke the mystery and spiritual atmosphere of this sacred lost city.
Interwoven with the images is the epic poem by Pablo Neruda entitled 'Heights Of Machu Picchu' that has been described as "one of Neruda's greatest poetic works". Rich and romantic, the dramatic poem represents stages of Neruda's journey through life and love, culminating in a climb to the lost Incan city, where he contemplates the lives of the ancient people who built Machu Picchu.
The book is a bilingual edition: noted translator Stephen Kessler has created a sparkling new English translation of Neruda's poem that runs side by side with the original Spanish.
