Ellen Sue Stern has two genuinely radical things to say to women in long term relationships with men:
1) Stop trying to "fix" your mate. He's never going to be perfect. He's never going to do all the things you want him to do, to be all the things you want him to be, to say the things you want to hear. He's a man, and it's just not in his nature.
2) Stop wasting your time being angry about it and complaining to him about it. Look to yourself, and what you really want out of life. Decide what it is and go get it. Stop using your dissatisfaction with your marriage as an excuse to stay dissatisfied with your life.
This is not a book for women in seriously abusive relationships. It's book for the rest of us, in average marriages filled (stuffed!) with average discontents. Ellen Sue wants to show us how to find happiness in our marriages by shedding our unrealistic expectations and looking what's beneath them. The secret is to stop being angry and to start using that energy to fuel self-empowerment. She'll devote the bulk of the book to teaching the nine steps we need to learn so that we can "stop waiting for him to make us happy and start getting what we want out of life!"
