A keen observer of human nature even then, she honed her talent through adolescence as she moved between Massachusetts and Nova Scotia, then firmly established herself as a poet during her time at Vassar College. Bishop moved through extraordinary mid-twentieth-century worlds with relationships among an international network of literati, visual artists, musicians, scholars, and politicians--along with a cosmopolitan gay underground that was then nearly invisible to the dominant culture.
