Set out in two parts, this work examines both the physical aspects of the buildings and the ideas that went into their composition. Acting as both a backdrop for luxurious retail goods and the physical manifestation of the brand sensibility, these spaces are agenre unto themselves. Prior to 1995 this kind of collaboration between brand and architect did not exist, Lous Vuitton was atthe forefront of this movement, creating exciting new spaces and advancing the careers of the chosen designers. These new buildings have transformed the streetscapes in the cities they populate, most notably Tokyo, their distinctive facades and umptuous interiors have elevated the standard for retail spaces everywhere. Organised geographically, the book shows that a broad range of styles and techniques are employed, as opposed to a formulaic approach to retail design, as each site is designed and developed to suit its surroundings and the local culture. The buildings represent the work of some of the most talented and well-respected architects and designers working today. The design process is highlighted, with the inclusion of scale models, blueprints and drawings as well as interviews with the architects. Each project is beautifully represented with multiple details of the stunning interiors and in-depth examinations of the textures and techniques used to convey the essence of luxury. Louis Vuitton devotees and architecture buffs will feel as though they have had a guided tour of each location and those already familiar with the sites will see details they have never noticed before. Form and function come together in these spaces as the role of fashion as both inspiration and resident inspires floor plans and finishes.
