Third Edition, Completed Revised & Updated
When 'Locomotives of Australia' first appeared as a 272 page book in 1974 it quickly earned the reputation among enthusiasts as the definitive book on the subject. This huge 364-page third edition brings the record right up to date with the inclusion of more than 60 new types and nearly 500 photographs, most of them new to the work.
In many respects, 'Locomotives of Australia' is more than a locomotive book - it is a social history of Australian railways. A product of years of exhaustive research, it explains why each locomotive was acquired and the circumstances surrounding a railway's construction. At times it discusses engineering developments and, where possible, outlines the location of preserved examples.
Standardised specifications, both in imperial and metric (to enable proper comparison between the older steam types and today's modern diesel and electric locomotives) have been provided along with each type's working road numbers.
'Locomotives of Australia' encompasses steam, diesel and electric locomotives introduced on both Australian government and privately-owned railways from 1854 to 1996 and will be a must for anyone remotely interested in the truly diverse array of Australian motive power.
