It is the year 1900 and‚ fresh from their mother's death‚ Verna and her sister Carlie accompany their father to their new home‚ on the sprawling grounds of the mental asylum where he works. Though they had hoped that their hardhearted Aunt Maude would be left behind‚ she insists on coming along to care for them.
When their father hires Eleanor‚ a troubled young woman from the asylum‚ as their maid‚ the girls befriend her-but as Eleanor draws further and further into herself‚ the girls have to decide what‚ if anything‚ they can do to help her.
