In the course of their 1858 battle for the Illinois senatorial seat, Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln conducted seven debates that addressed slavery, states' rights, and other hot-button issues. Although Lincoln lost the election, the debates brought him to national attention and helped propel him toward the presidency. This volume features an individual speech by each candidate and the texts for all debates.
