Liberty Bell would give anything to be your average fourteen-year-old, but with very different parents, living at opposite ends of the country, she struggles to make sense of who she actually is. Liberty's mum lives in Brighton and is a vegetarian environmentalist who is concerned with peace and enlightenment. Liberty's dad is a rigid control freak who lives in Manchester with his new partner, Misty, who never goes anywhere without her lipstick and Lycra who's main concern is improving her muscle-to-fat ratio.
Now Liberty's mum has got a new boyfriend -- an equally annoying hippie guy. Liberty finds herself living between two very different worlds. Then she meets Sam (the son of a friend of her mum's) down in Brighton and slowly a friendship forms. When something awful happens to Sam, she realises that what San has been through puts everything in perspective (he is an orphan casualty from the Bosnian war) and learns that being different isn't wrong, it's just about being comfortable with who you are.
