The letters in this volume were written by Rose Macaulay to her younger sister, Jean, a district nurse, during the years between 1926 and Rose's death in 1958. Accompanying the letters is a fragment of an unfinished novel, 'Venice Besieged', which gives a last glimpse of Rose Macaulay's blend of irony, compassion and zest.
