Very early one morning, Samantha Barlow, mother of two young children, was brutally attacked with a brick on her way to work as a policewoman in Kings Cross. She was left for dead in a park. She could have been any young woman – the attack was completely random. Her injuries were horrendous but Samantha was strong and defied the odds. She went through 22 months of rehab for both physical and head-trauma injuries, and triumphantly returned to work.
Samantha's husband Laurence, an inspector, was thrown into the role of carer. He was used to managing huge police operations like controlling riots in inner-city Sydney and was well out of his comfort zone as he watched his wife battle for her life. He was a protector – he wasn't used to feeling helpless.
The couple speak candidly of Samantha's journey over the last four years, and the personal price they've paid to be in the police force. But ultimately this is a story of an inspiring and gutsy woman who refused to give in and the man who stood by her side.
Samantha was medically discharged from the force, unable to make the sustained physical effort to do her job to a high level and Laurence has been diagnosed as suffering from PTSD. Their third child was born in February 2013
