A Food Lover's Guide to French Food and Festivals.
Throughout the regions of France, fairs and festivals attract locals and tourists alike, whatever the month. Few can resist the lure of markets as regional specialties and mouth-watering delicacies are fervently discussed amidst the bustle of the crowds. The season's bounty is brought to the market or fair cherries, chévres, nuts, foie gras, oysters, huile d'olives - all abundant reasons to celebrate.
'La France Gourmande' explores the age-old customs that make up France's cultural and culinary history. Many local traditions are revealed, building up a wonderful picture of French life from the Olive Oil Festival in Nyons in February, to the July Melon Fair in Provence and the Organic Products Fair in the autumn.
The book follows the French year from January to December and in each of the twelve chapters there are three events which reveal the practices of a still predominantly rural nation. For every fair or festival there is a simple recipe which makes use of local ingredients.
A region by region index then details all the relevant information for a category and cross-reference to the relevant information. For example, olive pressing is discussed in February, while a look at the different regions reveals that in Montegrosso the villagers celebrate the festival of the olive tree in July.
Illustrated with evocative photographs and ephemera, 'La France Gourmande' provides a unique companion guide to what is happening throughout France month by month. A gazetteer provides practical information on how to get to a fair, where to stay and what to see in the region. Also includes 35 mouthwatering recipes.
