A man, a boy and a cello. A city - Prague, just before the Velvet Revolution.
The story revolves around the character of Louka, a virtuoso performer with the Czech Philharmonic. Now banned from playing by the state, Louka finds himself in the cemetery orchestra and on his uppers. An illegal arranged marriage leaves him with a little Russian boy on his hands - Kolya. From these elements Zdenek Sverak - who himself plays Louka in the film - has woven an enduring tale of the power of music, language and love to transform lives.
Winner of the 1997 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
