Two sisters, one a talented trainee opera singer, the other a singing telegram, recall their childhoods in Australia. Inevitably, their accounts diverge. Charis works nights zooming around London dressed as a pregnant bride or a French maid, paid to flounce in on stag nights and office parties to sing mindless ditties. She eats anything she likes, says anything she likes and lives for the moment.

Marah is on a scholarship at Yale, earnestly rehearsing for the starring role in a production of 'Dido And Aeneas', obsessively controlling her voice, her weight, her memories. When their mother summons them home to Sydney for her marriage to Dingo, the man she left their father for, they go back with very different intentions.
