The purpose of this book is to identify, document and illustrate the most prevalent forms of jewellery owned and worn in the United States from 1600 to 1900, whether it was made in that country or imported at the time. The jewellery is discussed in chronological order to clarify technological and stylistic changes. Wherever appropriate, the history and significance of these precious objects is told in the words of contemporary owners and observers. A discussion of the role played by individual jewellers accompanies each of the four major divisions. This is the first book to be devoted to the subject and an effort has been made to be as comprehensive, but selective, as possible. Many significant examples of American jewellery still lie hidden in secret places, however, unrecognised, unidentified and unappreciated. It is hoped that this lavishly illustrated book will light the way to an understanding of what was considered important to our ancestors, illuminating another important facet of the country's history.
