It is time for Roiben's coronation as king of the Unseelie Court. Drunk on fairie wine and frightened of losing him, Kaye formally declares herself to Roiben, which means he must send her on a quest. And send her he does, on an impossible quest -- to find a faerie who lies. Until she succeeds, she cannot see or speak to him.
Kaye, miserable and convinced she belongs nowhere, decides to tell her mother the truth -- that she is not a human child but a faery, a changeling put in place of the real, human Kaye. Her mother's shocked disbelief causes Kaye to make a rash declaration -- she will find the human Kaye and return her.
Meanwhile, Silarial, Queen of the Seelie Court, is looking for Kaye. Silarial wants Roiben's throne, and she will try to use Kaye, and any means necessary, to get it. Kaye must somehow save herself, her human friends, the real Kaye, and Roiben -- and she will need all of her remarkably able wits and fiery independent spirit to do it.
