1860, Wimborne, Dorset. Rebecca Tullidge, miserably married to her callous husband, finds some escape through a love affair with another man. Saturday night, after putting her drunk husband to bed, she sneaks from their lodge to meet railway officer, John Bedloe. Much to her distress, she trips over her lover's dead body on the railway tracks. Determined to win votes for the upcoming election of mayor, Mr Feltham calls for Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Lemming to solve the hideous crime. As the pair arrive in the countryside, they are met with difficult personalities and conflicting alibis, making the investigation continue for much longer than Colbeck intends. With his pregnant wife back in London due to give birth to their first child, the inspector must work at speed if he is to return in time to be there when he becomes a father. On discovering Bedloe has a small town's worth of enemies as well as a sordid past, Colbeck and Leeming must unearth which of them is capable of plotting a violent murder. Could it possibly be a woman, distraught that he'd taken another lover? Or a jealous husband after discovering the truth? With a time limit looming over him, The Railway Detective is tasked with uncovering the truth.
