Edinburgh is about to become the home of the first Scottish parliament in three hundred years. Detective Inspector John Rebus is charged with Liaison, the new parliament being in his St Leonard's patch at Queensberry House - which is home not just to Scotland's new rulers, but also to the legend of a young man roasted on a spit by a madman.
When the fireplace where the youth died is uncovered, another more recent murder victim appears, then days later a third body is found - no mummified mystery man, but Roddy Grieve, prospective Member of the Scottish Parliament. As Rebus and his hand-picked crew dig up secrets twenty years buried, it begins to look as if Scotland's second attempt at devolution though more successful will be just a dirty . . .
