Amy is watching TV when it happens -- when the Before becomes the After, when her neighborhood, her country, her world are overrun by the vicious creatures she learns to call Them. Marooned in her high-security house, she is able to survive when others can't, and soon rescues an abandoned two-year-old discovered in a supermarket.
"Baby" and Amy exist in fearful silence, sleeping by day when the creatures are roaming; scavenging at night.
After a violent band of survivors makes an organized assault on their home, Amy knows she must flee their haven or face the worst. The two exist as nomads until they find themselves in New Hope, a survivors' colony built on a former government research facility.
In New Hope, Amy receives the shock of her life: her mother is not only alive, she directs the colony.
At first a dream with plentiful food, safety and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals itself as far from ideal with its rigid career tracks, punishments, and forced procreation. The colony also harbors dark secrets, and when the creatures break in and slaughter over 900 residents, Amy realizes there is more going on than meets the eye. This knowledge will soon force her to choose between everything she loves and her need to be free.
