Set against the eighties backdrop of the violent confrontation between the Baath regime and the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, In Praise of Hatred focuses on one prominent Aleppo family, and in particular the young girl who narrates the story. As the family's fortunes wane, the girl moves in to the home of her maternal grandfather - a beautiful house with three generations of secrets and high walls that are increasingly less able to protect from the social and political changes that are taking place outside. This is a story of crushed dreams, social upheaval and personal tragedy all caused by the violence in the background that slowly creeps into the family's life.
