The Issues and The People of Our Century
Geoffrey Blainey is one of the country's most prominent historians. 'In Our Time', a collection of Blainey's articles, speeches and essays of the 1990s, reflects on major events in Australia's lifetime, including challenges to our sense of nationhood today.
Among the offerings is an assessment of the highs and lows of the country's development since the First Fleet, arriving at a final balance sheet of credits and debits, victories and errors. Along with historical and political analysis comes Geoffrey's personal version of Australian life. He shares the first Christmas he remembers, in Gippsland in 1934, the speech he gave at his mother's funeral in 1991, and his observations on footballers.
