The first English translation of the Memoirs of Marchand is "an invaluable contribution to those interested in the Napoleonic period. As Napoleon's valet, Marchand is in constant contact with the Emperor during the last ten years of his life. "Educated, discreet, and devoted", Marchand records the personal work habits, relationship with family and staff, events at the Tuileries, Waterloo, the Bellerophon, the Northumberland, and finally, the moment of death.
