'HOTcopy' is an innovative interactive program on CD-ROM which helps journalism students hone key professional skills.
'HOTcopy' is an innovative learning tool for students in journalism courses. Packaged as a computer-based simulation on CD-ROM, it offers six realistic scenarios to help students develop key professional skills.
Students enter a virtual newsroom to undertake challenging reporting tasks ranging from producing copy under pressure to resolving ethical and editorial dilemmas. The simulations require responses to the demands of contacts, key editorial and production staff, as well as to typical obstacles to gathering and writing news stories.
Student work for each scenario is compiled into a secure Word document which is emailed to their lecturer for assessment. Students can work from home, and 'HOTcopy' can be used either for skills development or as an assessment tool.
'HOTcopy' is an ideal way for students who have completed an introduction to journalism writing to hone their writing and decision-making skills in a realistic context. It also includes a scenario for more advanced students. The CD-ROM is accompanied by an instructors' guide.
'HOTcopy' is winner of a national award in 2002 from the Australian Institute of Training and Development National Award in the category of Innovation in Learning.
