Herb Hamlet grew up in the Brisbane suburb of Wynnum and left school at 14 to work in an iron foundry. At twenty-one he joined the army, serving with the Royal Australian Engineers for six years. During that time, he gained his matriculation by correspondence and upon his discharge, joined the Australian Public Service, rising to a management position.
Herb Hamlet now lives a quiet life with his wife, Lyn, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. After accepting early retirement, he gained a degree in political science and international studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The writing bug then hit him and he has been busy ever since. Bluey's War is his second published work.
