William I was born in 1028, and became the first Norman King of England at the age of thirty eight until his death in 1087.
William's invasion of England in 1066 is one of the most famous in history, where he led an army of Normans, Bretons, Flemings, and Frenchmen to a victory over King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings that changed the course of English history forever. He brought with him a programme of building and fortification, changes to the English language, a shift in the upper levels of society and the church, and adoption of some aspects of continental church reform.
