This book describes how to grow plants commonly cultivated in the tropics and the sub-tropics. Many of the plants listed here can also be grown successfully in mild-temperate climates, as indoor plants, or in protected warm parts of the garden.

There is information on soils and fertilisers (including potting soils and dealing with situations unique to tropical climates such as the rapid breakdown of fertilisers and organic materials). Other soil problems are also explored, such as cultivating plants in the very alkaline soils found on coral islands and shell beach areas. Water management is critical in the tropics, and this is covered in detail, including practical advice on different ways to apply and conserve water. Other chapters include planning your garden, container gardening (even utilising hydroponic techniques).

A major part of the book lists particular types of tropical plants, such as trees and shrubs, palms and palm-like plants, bamboos, grasses and grass-like plants, conifers, climbers, low-growing plants, and lastly bulbs and herbaceous perennials. Tropical fruit plants are also included.

This book covers more plant varieties than other books of similar size and is an excellent reference for all gardeners (new or experienced) who are interested in growing tropical plants.
