"Pursuading a witch in Flores to lay a curse on Alexander Downer. Just for being a buffoon? What an
awful, mean spirited, outrageous thing for Paul Toohey
to be doing. But I have to say, shocked and outraged
I was, I fell about. This boy writes like a dream."
Gareth Evans MP.
Paul Toohey was born in 1963. The rest is something of a blur. At some point he seems to have become the Australian exponent of what was once known as New Journalism. This might explain why he became engaged in a series of increasingly bizarre 'investigations', which led him to Memphis in search of Malcolm Fraser's trousers, to Indonesia to find a witch to put a curse on Alexander Downer, and to Queensland in search of a lost tribe of Aboriginal pygmies. (He found them.) Toohey has also researched New Zealand stallions who eat their handlers, Australia's first black C&W superstar, and the links between the Dodo and the Lady Susan Renouf. And he's not afraid to tell you what he found out. Then there are the big questions: Was Elvis the Second Coming of the Lord? Why was the man in the song trying to get to Phoenix? What would happen if the mood was blown up?
