Just one week before Christmas, Martin Pavel cowers on the floor of a busy Glasgow post office under the barrel of an AK47, his eyes locked on those of the terrified child next to him. Head pressed to the ground, Martin watches in shock as the boy's grandfather calmly helps the robber fill a bag with of money. Then shock turns to horror as the old man faces the gunman and allows himself to be blown away in a hail of bullets.
Recently returned to work after the birth of her twins, DS Alex Morrow is called in to head the investigation and make sense of this cold-blooded crime. Why did the grandfather not drop to the floor to protect himself like the rest? Was it a noble act of self-sacrifice or did the old man and his killer have a shared past? Morrow's enquiries lead her to the door of Davie Gillespie, a politician who is currently fighting a political smear campaign - and the wrath of his wife - after he's publicly accused of having an affair with a young employee. And unknown to Morrow a temptation too great to resist leads two of her colleagues, DCs Leonard and Wilder, to make a rash decision which leaves them at the mercy of a ruthless blackmailer.
The brutal shooting of an old man, the misdemeanours of a promiscuous politician and two hundred grand of illegally confiscated money - one city, three crimes and a powerful connection that runs from Glasgow's dark criminal underworld to the highest echelons of its society.
