There has long been an association between the discipline/joy of gardening and that of prayer and the religious life. "For as long as I can remember," Jane Mossendew writes, "prayer and gardening have been mutually supportive."
Her experience has been carefully worked out over a number of years in this book of daily meditations based on a plant per day. Each plant has a cultivation note, history and lore, towards meditation and intercessions. There are also suggested readings and places of spiritual retreat. The book includes 24 line drawings to illustrate the less familiar plants.
The author has put a lifetime of reading and prayer into this project and the result is an extremely well planned book that can be read on a variety of levels: the plant notes are very interesting in themselves; the meditation provided is satisfying; the reading suggestions can be followed or not depending on time and inclination; the intercessions move the gardener's (and other's) thoughts out to the wider world.
This is the first of two planned volumes; its companion would cover Lent and Eastertide.
