A dangerous romance set against the drama and confusion of the closing days of World War II.
Dublin, October 1944. In the closed, inward-looking world of the capital of neutral Ireland a young prostitute is murdered. Bridie Keogh was known to have soldiers - and even German spies - among her clientele. Her murder draws medical student Honor Cusack into the dangerous and unpredictable world of espionage and obsession. Honor is involved with Oscar Raeder, a young German doctor who has been studying in Dublin since just before the war.
Suspected of Bridie's murder, Raeder becomes the focus for hatred of Germany. Aghast at the prejudice he encounters, convinced he is no murderer, Honor agrees to help him return to his homeland. But, all the while, there is the past to be reckoned with. And the past is present throughout, in the shape of someone who watches, and waits, and vengefully helps the inevitable tragedy come about.
