This collection of fiction has been drawn from the published books in UQP's prestigious Black Australian Writing list.
Extracts from novels work here as self-contained short stories and are from such novels as 'Bitin Back' by Vivienne Cleven, 'Caprice' by Doris Pilkington Garimara, 'Unbranded' by Herb Wharton, 'Plains Of Promise' by Alexis Wright, 'Hard Yards' and 'Steam Pigs' by Melissa Lucashenko and 'Bridge Of Triangles' by John Muk Muk Burke.
Between each fiction extract is a section of poems from such collections as 'Itinerant Blues' by Samuel Wagan Watson, 'Black Lives' by Jack Davis, 'Dreaming In Urban Areas' by Lisa Bellear and others. Some of these pieces were the winning entries in the annual David Unaipon Award.
