The lives and reminiscences of Khuku and her husband Shib, a couple in their sixties, and of Khuku's younger, less prosperous brother, Bhola, and the family's marriage plans for their unambitious son Bhaskar make up this novel sent in Calcutta in winter.
This saga draws half a century of public and private histories, the narrative flits from mind to mind, flashes forward and back although the situations and moments are lovingly strung together by Amit Chaudhuri.
