No study of the period of the English civil wars is complete without reference to John Lilburne and his party, the Levellers. It was Lilburne who spelt out to the England over three centuries ago the true meaning of democracy. His unflagging opposition to authority resulted from a consistent fight for civil liberty. He stopped at nothing to further his cause - whether it be attacking Oliver Cromwell, King Charles I or stage managing his own trial for life as though he were producing a play.

As agitator supreme he had no equal and for this he was shipped and pilloried by the Star Chamber, imprisoned by the Long Parliament, and twice put on trial for his life by Cromwell. Lilburne's struggles on behalf of the ordinary citizen never faltered. He died a Quaker in his early forties.
